FORT LAWN, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina state Sen. Mike Fanning likes to talk to people. Politically, South Carolina varies from its neighbors. No explanation is offered for the inertia, which leaves South Carolina and Wyoming as the only states in the nation without such a law. South Carolina Republicans, meanwhile, have taken advantage of the changing national priorities of both parties. They took over the South Carolina Senate in 2000 by getting a Democrat to switch parties.

AdvertisementAdvertisementYou've probably heard about Nancy Mace by now. But there's far more to Moore's campaign than simply not being Nancy Mace. In January, a federal district court in South Carolina found that Mace's district had been unconstitutionally racially gerrymandered. Republican state lawmakers appealed that ruling, kicking the final decision up the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, where oral arguments were heard on Wednesday. "I think [voters] look at Nancy Mace and believe that she is probably more motivated to get on national TV and create headlines for herself than to actually work for the people," said Moore.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is taking up a new congressional redistricting case, this time from South Carolina, that could shape the fight for partisan control of the House of Representatives. Political Cartoons View All 1206 ImagesDemocrats seem likely to gain a seat in Alabama following a Supreme Court decision in June that led to a court-ordered redistricting. The state's new map will give Alabama two congressional districts where Black voters comprise a substantial portion of the electorate. In South Carolina, Black voters wouldn’t be as numerous in a redrawn district. The lower court put its order on hold to allow the state to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Jan 6 (Reuters) - South Carolina's Republican-created congressional map deliberately split up Black neighborhoods in Charleston to diminish their voting power and must be redrawn, a three-judge federal panel ruled on Friday. The Republican-controlled legislature adopted the map last year after the 2020 U.S. Census as part of the once-a-decade redistricting process that all states complete. Friday's decision focused on the state's 1st congressional district, which has long been anchored in Charleston County. The judges – all three appointed by Democratic presidents – gave the state legislature until the end of March to submit a new map. No elections can take place in the 1st district until it has been redrawn, the panel said.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said Wednesday that he would back his state's defunct law banning same-sex marriage if the Supreme Court were to overturn its 2015 landmark gay marriage ruling. "Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think marriage ought to be between a man and a woman — just like I think that boys ought to play in boy sports and girls ought to play in girl sports," McMaster, 75, said. Cunningham appeared shocked, replying: "It's 2022 and Governor McMaster wants to ban same-sex marriage — you just heard that tonight, folks. If the landmark decision were reversed, it would once again fall to the states to decide on the legality of same-sex marriage. Lawmakers in Congress have introduced a measure that would federally permit same-sex marriage, the Respect for Marriage Act.
